  • Principal's Message

    Hello Burr Families,

Welcome back! I truly hope that everyone enjoyed the winter break and had the opportunity to spend time with your family and friends! We have been so busy planning a wonderful month ahead full of fun and excitement! Some great upcoming events include March is Reading Month, our PTO Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball, Pathways to Success, and Kindergarten Open House!

During the month of March, we will be utilizing some of our Title 1 funds to provide a book for every family. This is an exciting opportunity for the entire school to participate in the One Book One School initiative. Our book choice for this family read will be Ways to Make Sunshine. We will have a special newsletter specifically focused on this book that will be interactive and informational. We will also have a March Is Reading Month Calendar with fun and creative ways to participate and celebrate reading this month with your child(ren). The calendar is attached at the bottom of this BBB.

Utica Community Schools will once again host the Pathways to Success at Henry Ford II HS on Thursday, March 3rd from 6:00-8:30pm. This event will showcase all of the opportunities available to all UCS students throughout their educational journey.

Our class of 2035 will be welcomed into Burr Elementary during our Kindergarten Open House on Thursday, March 24th at 7pm. The evening will provide parents with information about kindergarten readiness, as well as a chance to learn about the district and our school. We are excited to welcome new Bulldogs to our family.

As always, thank you for all that you do to support your child and our school community. Together we can ensure success for all students!

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Poleski

Burr Elementary Mission Statement

At Burr Elementary School, educational success depends on the combined efforts of all students, parents, staff and community.
We work together
to educate and challenge our children to meet their individual needs and goals. As a community, we will teach respect for uniqueness of self and the diversity of others.

The Academic Goals for the 2015-2016 School Year will continue to be:

1. Increase the number of students who score at the proficient level or higher in mathematics as measured by the district assessments and M-Step

2. Increase student's reading achievement in Kindergarten through 6th Grade

3. Increase student's writing scores on the district wide writing assessment

4. Increasing the number of students who score at the proficient level or higher in social studies and science

Conferences

At Burr Elementary, our children take responsibility for their learning and are equal partners in their learning with their parents and teachers. These conferences help establish communication between all the stakeholders: parent/guardian, student, and the teacher. A final benefit of Parent/STUDENT/Teacher conferences is the collaboration that emerges. At the conference, everyone shares ideas so that the final goals are the product of a three-way discussion. This is a true partnership between home and school that ensures a child’s academic success.
For the last 5 years, we had 100% participation at our Burr Elementary Fall Parent/STUDENT/teacher conferences. It is imperative that all our stakeholders are all on the same page. Please make sure that your child attends the conference.

UCS Vision

All children have the right to a rigorous, high-quality education which meets their individual needs. UCS will respect, encourage and empower each and every student to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to be successful, contributing members of a diverse community and global society.

UCS Mission

We are committed to exemplary teaching and learning in order for our students to be prepared for success in the 21st Century.
We will achieve this commitment by engaging the entire community to focus on each child's achievement, with the expectation that every student will pursue some type of post-high school educational endeavor.

Core Values

  • Every child can learn and achieve.
  • Parents and guardians are partners in the learning process.
  • Being “smart” can be achieved through persistence, hard work and effective effort.
  • Excellence is expected and celebrated.
  • Data is used to guide our decision-making.
  • All employees will exemplify ethical behavior; exhibit a strong work ethic; and continue to develop their leadership, performance and service skills.
  • Technology supports and enhances instruction, business operations, research and communications.
  • The Board of Education, district educators/staff, parents, community members and business leaders must collaborate and work as a team to enhance educational opportunities for student success.
