    Dear Burr Families,

Happy Summer!  The end of the school year is always bitter-sweet and filled with so much emotion.  We will miss our 6th graders as they move on to Jeannette and Davis Junior High Schools and are anxious to welcome our new Kindergarteners in the fall.

It was wonderful to be able to celebrate the end of the year with families during Filed Day, 6th grade celebrations, pizza parties, and our outdoor movie night!  Thank you to our incredible PTO and parent volunteers for helping with the events.

I am hoping that you and your family enjoy a wonderful summer ~ that you have time to relax and enjoy family time.  Please encourage your child(ren) to read, write and utilize math skills.  Hopefully, many of them will attend our Summer Programs and keep their skills sharp.

If you travel or do something special, please be sure to send a postcard!  We would love to create a board in the fall of all the places our Bulldogs have been.  Whether it is a trip to the Detroit Zoo, a trip up north, a visit to another state or perhaps out of the country (and we do have some traveling families), please send a card or picture.

As always, thank you for all you do to help make Burr the awesome school community that it is!  Working together, we will continue to accomplish great things!

    Your proud principal,

    Jeanne Poleski

Burr Elementary Mission Statement

At Burr Elementary School, educational success depends on the combined efforts of all students, parents, staff and community.
We work together
to educate and challenge our children to meet their individual needs and goals. As a community, we will teach respect for uniqueness of self and the diversity of others.

The Academic Goals for the 2015-2016 School Year will continue to be:

1. Increase the number of students who score at the proficient level or higher in mathematics as measured by the district assessments and M-Step

2. Increase student's reading achievement in Kindergarten through 6th Grade

3. Increase student's writing scores on the district wide writing assessment

4. Increasing the number of students who score at the proficient level or higher in social studies and science

Conferences

At Burr Elementary, our children take responsibility for their learning and are equal partners in their learning with their parents and teachers. These conferences help establish communication between all the stakeholders: parent/guardian, student, and the teacher. A final benefit of Parent/STUDENT/Teacher conferences is the collaboration that emerges. At the conference, everyone shares ideas so that the final goals are the product of a three-way discussion. This is a true partnership between home and school that ensures a child’s academic success.
For the last 5 years, we had 100% participation at our Burr Elementary Fall Parent/STUDENT/teacher conferences. It is imperative that all our stakeholders are all on the same page. Please make sure that your child attends the conference.

UCS Vision

All children have the right to a rigorous, high-quality education which meets their individual needs. UCS will respect, encourage and empower each and every student to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to be successful, contributing members of a diverse community and global society.

UCS Mission

We are committed to exemplary teaching and learning in order for our students to be prepared for success in the 21st Century.
We will achieve this commitment by engaging the entire community to focus on each child's achievement, with the expectation that every student will pursue some type of post-high school educational endeavor.

Core Values

  • Every child can learn and achieve.
  • Parents and guardians are partners in the learning process.
  • Being “smart” can be achieved through persistence, hard work and effective effort.
  • Excellence is expected and celebrated.
  • Data is used to guide our decision-making.
  • All employees will exemplify ethical behavior; exhibit a strong work ethic; and continue to develop their leadership, performance and service skills.
  • Technology supports and enhances instruction, business operations, research and communications.
  • The Board of Education, district educators/staff, parents, community members and business leaders must collaborate and work as a team to enhance educational opportunities for student success.
