Logo of PBISOur school is participating in an important initiative called Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).

What is Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports?

PBIS is a process for creating safer and more effective schools. It is a systems approach to enhancing the capacity of schools to educate all children by developing research-based, school-wide, and class-room behavior support systems.

The process focuses on improving a school’s ability to teach and support positive behavior for all students. Rather than a prescribed program, PBIS provides systems for schools to design, implement, and evaluate effective school-wide, classroom, non- classroom, and student specific plans. PBIS in-cludes school-wide pro-cedures and processes intended for all stu-dents and all staff in all settings.

PBIS is not a program or a curriculum. It is a team-based process for systemic problem solving, planning, and evaluation. It is an approach to creating a safe and productive learning environment where teachers can teach and all students can learn.

What is PBIS at our school?

We have adopted a unified set of classroom rules. These rules define our expectations for behavior in our school. Very soon, You will see these rules posted throughout the school and your child will be learning them in all settings.

With PBIS, kids learn about behavior, just as they learn other subjects like math or science.

The key to PBIS is prevention, not punishment.

Examples of PBIS at Burr: The PBIS lunch trophy incentive has made a large, positive impact on the lunch room procedures.

Once a class earns the trophy five times they plan a meaningful “thank you” treat to celebrate their great behaviors! An area that remained a challenge was transferring the 100+ kindergarten kiddos from the lunch room to the playground; that is one long line of over 100 five year olds!

Therefore, the K noon supervisors added a trophy incentive just for them. The K class who walks on the red brick road (hallway) the quietest with best walking feet receives the trophy for the day. This just started last week and is already making a difference!

The positive incentives are really working.

Listen for talk at home about students earning Bulldog Bucks on the buses, on the playground, and in the lunchroom!

With all of this focus on catching kids doing right, the great behaviors will grow in every way. The positivity at Burr is absolutely contagious!
